BREAK THE LOCK ON OUR CITY POLITICS
Fight for Accountable, Responsible, Affordable Local Government
A select few special interests and their handpicked candidates control our city government. The Austin City Hall special interests’ scheme to minimize voter participation in local elections has one overriding goal: a city council that does their bidding for their benefit, not ours. It has worked, until now.
Here’s how we will end their unchecked reign of power:
MOBILIZE THE PEOPLE TO ELECT CANDIDATES WHO REPRESENT US
We will end the City Hall special interests’ manipulation of our elections and our government. Turnout in city elections has dropped from 38% in 1981 to an abysmal 7% in 2011. Our most urgent goal: identify, organize and turnout an additional 25,000 voters committed to a truly representative government.
ACHIEVE STRATEGIC CHANGE TO END THEIR SPECIAL INTEREST SCHEME
We will work to change the city charter in specifically targeted ways, including uniform election date for city elections in November of even numbered years to minimize cost and maximize voter turnout; single member districts; repealing and removing barriers to maximum voter participation.
MAKE SURE TAXES AND FEES AUSTINITES PAY ARE SPENT WISELY AND PROPERLY
We will tell Austinites the truth about how the city spends our hard-earned tax dollars and fees.
Our focus will be on Austin Energy, the Budget and Traffic Congestion.
We will not accept irresponsible Cap Metro or City Urban Rail decisions not based on cost-effective mobility for all citizens.
Top priority must be given for funds necessary to address costly gridlock for the 99% of passenger miles traveled on roads in our greater Austin area.
